Must Follow Moving ChecklistMoving into somewhere new is both frantic and exciting. Whether you are doing it on your own or being helped by some acquaintance, a guideline should be followed to keep everything in order. And here is one that you may follow:

Things To Do In The First Place:

  • Start looking for a suitable moving company, as soon as you finalize a deal. You can always do it online.
  • If you are more interested in doing it on your own, then book a moving truck. To avoid any sorts of complicacy, get a formal quote comprised of all the details and cost.

Tip: Holiday seasons and weekends are usually crammed for moving companies or truck rentals. So, book at least two to three months before you move. Otherwise there is no guarantee that you will be able to move on the day you decided.

60 Days Before Moving:

  • There is no need to take everything to the new place. Find out what you really need and discard the others.

Tip: Before moving, arrange a yard sale and sell the unnecessary stuff and make some cash.

  • Look out for fragile products that need extra care while moving out. Also follow particular instruction for sensitive goods.
  • Moving into a new school district means you have to start the transfer process for your kids soon.
  • Collect supplies and boxes beforehand. You may require enough tissue paper, bubble wrap.

1 Month Before Moving Day:

    • It’s time to get started. Start with the items that you don’t need on a regular basis. Number and label your boxes to make the unpacking process easier.
    • While packing, list valuable items with relevant information. Declare these items to be eligible for insurance payment, lest a product is lost or damaged.
    • Go to your postal office to have your new address updated.

Some other institutions that have to be informed are:

  1. Phone and cable providers
  2. Utility and hydro companies
  3. Insurance companies
  4. Banks
  5. Doctors and dentists
  6. Credit card companies

Tip: Most of the companies allow their clients to change address online.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day:

  • Call the moving company to be sure about your reservation.
  • Transfer or change your newspaper delivery service.

1 Week Before Moving Day:

  • The proper time for completing most of the packing is a week before the due date.
  • Separate the items of importance like passport and jewelry and carry them in a bag with you.

A Few Days Before Moving Day:

  • The moving company should be given a map dictating the routes. Also give a contact number to reach you on the moving day.
  • Daily items like toothbrush, medicines, soap, cups, clothing etc. should be packed in a separate bag.

Moving Day:

  • Note down readings from utility meters (old and new home).
  • Try to be physically present during loading and unloading.
  • Finally, check if everything is alright before the movers leave. Make sure nothing is damaged or lost.
